what3words Product Design Lead
Since 2020 I have led the what3words Product Design Team which is responsible for the design & UX of the full suite of products that are powered by the what3words API and SDK. This includes the online map website, developer website, watch app, voice products, as well as our core consumer app and more.
what3words App
The core what3words app currently has an average of 5 million monthly active users, and is now available in a staggering 54 different languages. The design of this app is very much a team effort with multiple designers working on it at different times and contributing to different features. You can read about the process behind the design overhaul of our app here.
FindMe
Role in project: Lead design & UX
FindMe is an ultra-acessible, low file size web page that allows anyone to find their current what3words address. Designed for location sharing in emergencies, this web page is being used by emergency services around the world to find people in remote locations.
what3words Map Site
Role in project: Lead design & UX
The mainstay of the what3words website; the map site allows anyone to find, share, navigate, and save a what3words address. A simple utility, this website is used by consumers, business partners, and emergency call centres alike.
Product Design Library
Role in project: Concept & construction
This is not a Design System. It’s a flexible and intuitive Product Design Library tailored to our specific requirements. It has been designed and constructed to allow anyone to easily find and configure the designs that they need, either from scratch using components as building blocks, or by making quick updates to designs in the cheat sheet. You can view the Figma App Design Library and Web Design Library
App Photo Feature
Role in project: Design & UX
The photo feature within the main what3words app allows users to add a what3words address sticker to a photo in order to describe the precise location where it was taken. Popular with fans across social media, this feature allows for customisation of the sticker style and colour palette.
3rd Party Integrations
Role in project: Design & UX of integration guidelines
The aim of what3words is to become integrated into as many different apps and platforms as possible, including eCommerce checkout fields, GIS tools, logistic platforms, and navigation systems. In order to do this we provide guidance and support to 3rd parties to make sure what3words integrations provide the best experience possible for all users.
50 Languages Mini-Website
Role in project: Website design & build
To celebrate the milestone of what3words being available in a staggering 50 unique languages, we created a mini-website with fun facts and insights about each of the languages, as well as behind the scenes facts about how the word list for each language was assembled.
Developer Components
Role in project: Lead UX
In order to help developers integrate what3words as easy as possible, our tech team has created various components that allow what3words to be added to platforms by simply copying and pasting a few lines of code. These components include Address Validation as shown here (where a user can find their corresponding street address by entering their what3words address), as well as our core Autosuggest component that’s used on the checkout page of eCommerce sites like Boohoo, Dorothy Perkins, and Burton.
what3words Illustration Identity
Role in project: Lead illustrator
Development of a comprehensive illustration style to be used across product and marketing.
what3words Product Icons
Role in project: Design
Design of the comprehensive set of what3words product icons for use across platforms.
50 Languages Typography Poster Design
Role in project: Design
Design of 9 of the typography posters that were created to celebrate the style and culture of each of the 50 languages supported by what3words. These posters contributed to a coffee-table book to celebrate the 50 languages milestone.
what3words Socks
Role in project: Sock Design
These socks were created as a gift to those that have supported what3words in its recent crowdfunding campaign.
